Social Media | Why I Bailed on Using Instagram for Promoting My Business

Instagram is one of the hardest social media platforms to promote a business with. Although it absolutely can be done (many designers and shop owners are doing it very well), it just wasn't the right fit for me to promote this design studio.

For starters, I tend to keep my IG very personal. Not exactly private, but as a means to share my life with friends and family as well as humanize myself to clients or potential clients.

I'm not going to arguee that Instagram is a fantastic tool for blog or business promotion. Instead I'm sharing the reasons why it just didn't work for me and I'm not going to try and work it.

So why don't I use Instagram as a way to generate design traffic? Read on and hear me out, it may not be what you think!

When I first created my Instagram account I filled it with pictures of life and linked it directly to my personal Facebook page so everyone could see. I had random pictures of nature, my fat cat, family & friends, you name it. Then I got really serious about blogging on the design studio and decided to clean out all of my accounts. I purged like no one has ever purged before and it gave me the idea to write the post about regularly auditing all social media platforms. Where I have definitely been doing that weekly, I also struggled with IG and how to transition it to business.

The truth is that I hated IG for business. I hated the hoops I had to jump through to share a blog post, that there really was no way to link my direct post in an IG post and that I wasn't generating enough traffic from the platform anyway. So last week I decided to, once again, purge my IG entirely, and cut out the business angle. After all, I am already dedicating Twitter for business and I have two Facebook fan pages for each blog, I only share business posts on G+ and I really wanted a platform all my own, for oversharing and personal posts.

Since my relaunch here on September 1st, I have had life calm down enough that I was really starting to miss free writing and personal blogging. I knew that when I rebranded here that I would also rebrand my Elle Ay Esse: Personal + Lifestyle Blog and, once everything from the relaunch calmed down here, I was ready to do it. So I took my purged Instagram and decided it was going to be the one social network I shared personal things on.

In the end I don't regret this decision. I wasn't generating enough traffic from IG anyway to use it for business and I figure I can transition later if I want or need to. Until then, I am enjoying sharing the "behind-the-scenes" looks at my life, humanizing myself to those I do business with and otherwise having a companion to my personal blog (ps. new post out yesterday!)

The takeaway I have for all of you reading is this: It's OK to have something all your own. It's OK to not make every.single.social.network part of your business. Once you have niched yourself it will become harder and harder to let other things slip through. Other, completely irrelevant things. So it is just fine for you to not have everything you do engulfed in your business. After all, if you do not make time for you, you'll lose yourself and that is just no way to do business.

Start the Discussion:

Do you use Instagram for business?
Do you have one social network you keep entirely personal?

Happy Socializing y'all!

  1. Thank you! I thought I was the only one who dislikes Instagram. If they aren't going to make it easy for bloggers to link up their posts and post pictures (mine are all huge Pinterest-style), then I don't wanna play! Like you, I just use it for pictures of my cat and stuff like that and rarely even that. Do you know what is fabulous though? Triberr. It's not as cool and sexy as IG but it's a great little workhorse. I share maybe 10 posts a day from various tribe-mates - easy as click, click, click and the. They share my stuff back. Super easy and very efficient.

    1. Hi Adrian! Thanks so much for coming by and leaving this comment, I am so glad I am not alone in my feelings here! I love me some IG, don't get me wrong. And I do occasionally share blog posts but for the most part I can't see where I would even want to use it for blog and business marketing! Maybe it works for others but I kind of like having at least one area that isn't full of business and I can just be me :) - E

  2. Yes, Instagram is a pain, but I have noticed that since I started promoting my blogs on IG, I have been getting more views on my blogs which have led to more likes on FB. It's not huge amount, but it was more than I was getting. I understand how you feel tho. It is overwhelming at all the social media out there. You can't be on all things. I have decided to concentrate on Twitter and IG for marketing because they are my favorites. FB I could take it or leave it.

  3. I found this via the SITS girls, and I totally agree! I occasionally use Insta for my blog if I'm just really excited to share something on my insta that is on the blog, but I have NEVER seen traffic generated from Insta to my blog. The no real links thing is really bad and has to change soon! I really dislike seeing accounts that are totally devoted to promoting a blog, with completely perfect pictures. I don't want more followers on Instagram, really. I want more followers for my blog though. Facebook has been a much better way to generate that.

    1. Hi Melissa! I am so happy you came by! I adore the SITS Girls too :) I have issues with all my platforms but now that it's 2016 I have decided to do away with personal Facebooking. I expect to amp up my IG because of that as it's now my last personal platform. Work it were you can and just enjoy the rest <3

Thanks for popping over! - E

  4. Instagram is a pain in the butt. I have several completely different blogs, and to create Instagram accounts for them all was insane, let alone actually putting content on these accounts. Basically, Instagram make things really hard for no good reason.

    1. Hi Amge!

I love IG for personal use but not so much for cultivating my business. I'm awed by those who can make it happen and I have a client that is big on IG but it's just not my gig. I'm always glad to find others of a like mind!

Thanks for coming by to leave a comment <3 - E

  5. Hi Elley - Wow, you said exactly what I think every time I try to use IG for my blog! There isn't enough time to figure out how to share blog content on IG. I too just use my account for personal stuff. Pics of the moon, my kids, a pretty flower here and there. Nothing complicated! Glad I found you on SITS!

    1. Hi Tammy! I am always happy to hear that there is someone else out there who just doesn't feel the need to market on IG. Not only is it complicated and messy but (frankly) I just don't "get it"!
